Two crops, one file
Etsy shows your listing photo at different aspect ratios depending on where a shopper sees it. Desktop search crops thumbnails to roughly 4:3 landscape. Mobile crops to square. Both come from the same file you uploaded.
That means a photo can look composed and deliberate in your editor and still lose something in both places — the sides trimmed in one, the top and bottom in the other. And most Etsy browsing happens on mobile, so the square crop is the one that decides whether anyone clicks.
The fix is composition, not size. Keep your product centred with even margin on all four edges. A square photo with the product in the middle survives a 4:3 crop and a 1:1 crop equally well. A tightly framed or off-centre composition does not.
The first photo is treated differently
Etsy's own guidance notes that the first listing photo should be at least 635 pixels on both sides, or the listing appears lower in search results. At the recommended 2000 px you clear that easily — but it is worth knowing that the first slot carries a ranking consequence the other nine do not.
