The grid crop, explained
For years the Instagram profile grid showed square thumbnails, so everyone designed 4:5 posts and accepted that the grid cropped top and bottom. In 2025 that changed: the grid now previews at roughly 3:4.
The feed and the grid now disagree. The feed displays up to 4:5, so a 1080 × 1350 post fills it perfectly. The grid forces that same image into 3:4 by trimming the sides — about 30 pixels off each edge.
The result catches people out because nothing looks wrong when they post. The damage only shows on the profile: a face at the edge of a group shot half gone, a caption that ran to the margins clipped, a logo in a corner vanished.
Two ways to handle it. Post at 1080 × 1440 and the grid is exact, at the cost of a slightly shorter feed presence. Or stay at 1080 × 1350 and treat the outer strips as a danger zone — keep faces, text and logos in the middle.
Which feed format to use
Portrait 4:5 is the default for most posts. It occupies about 20% more screen than a square as someone scrolls, which is the single easiest way to hold attention a moment longer.
Square 1:1 still works for symmetrical compositions, product shots and anything centred. It is also the safest if you are unsure how a crop will land.
Landscape 1.91:1 takes the least vertical space and generally gets the least reach. Reach for it only when the picture genuinely needs the width — panoramas, wide group shots, architecture — where a portrait crop would cost more than the height gains.
Stories and reels: the safe zone
Both are 1080 × 1920, full-screen vertical. The canvas is the easy part — the mistake is putting content where the interface covers it.
The top strip carries your username and the profile ring; the bottom carries the reply bar and interaction buttons. Keep anything that has to be read inside roughly the centre 1080 × 1420. Text that looks perfectly placed in your editor routinely ends up half behind a Send Message field.
