Why 1080×1440 exists
Instagram changed its profile grid in 2025. The grid used to preview posts as squares; it now previews them at roughly 3:4.
That created a mismatch. The feed still shows up to 4:5, so a 1080×1350 post looks perfect while scrolling — but in your profile grid, Instagram trims a strip from each side to force it into 3:4. Anything close to the left or right edge is gone: faces at the margin, text running to the edges, a logo in a corner.
1080×1440 is already 3:4, so nothing gets cut. The tradeoff is that it sits slightly shorter than 4:5 in the feed. If your grid is part of how people decide to follow you, that tradeoff is usually worth it.
