Shopify Product Image Size: 2048×2048

Shopify recommends 2048 × 2048 pixels, and that is the size at which zoom is enabled automatically. Square is the safe shape across themes. This tool hits it in your browser, with nothing uploaded.

Consistency beats perfection

On a marketplace, each listing is judged on its own. On your own store, products appear side by side — in collection pages, search results, the homepage, related-product rows.

That changes what matters. One beautifully lit product photo next to eleven inconsistent ones reads as sloppy, not as one good photo. A catalog where every image shares the same dimensions, the same background treatment and the same lighting reads as a real brand even if no individual shot is exceptional.

So pick a single approach — square at 2048, one background style, one lighting setup — and apply it to everything. Consistency is the thing customers actually perceive.

Why square, and what breaks if you don't

Most Shopify themes render product images inside square containers. Feed a non-square image into one and the theme either pads it with white space or crops it to fit.

The cropping is the dangerous half, because it crops from the centre. That is what takes the top off a tall bottle or the base off a pair of shoes — the exact part of the product a customer wanted to see. If you are running a theme that uses a portrait ratio, crop your masters to that ratio yourself rather than letting the theme decide.

Page speed is part of the spec

Shopify allows up to 20 MB per image, but that allowance is not a target. Product images are usually the heaviest thing on a store page, page speed affects both conversion and search ranking, and the difference between a 3 MB and a 300 KB image is invisible to a customer and very visible to your load time. Size to 2048, then run files through the compress tool before uploading.

How to resize for Shopify

  1. Upload your photo — the target is already set to 2048 × 2048.
  2. Click Resize and download.
  3. Repeat for every product so your whole catalog shares one dimension.
  4. If files are heavy, run them through the compress tool before uploading — page speed matters on Shopify.

Shopify image size — FAQ

What size should a Shopify product image be?

2048 × 2048 pixels square. That is Shopify's recommendation, and it is also the point at which zoom is enabled automatically. Square is the safest shape because most themes display product images in square containers.

Why square rather than portrait or landscape?

Because most Shopify themes render product images in square containers. A non-square image gets padded with white space or centre-cropped depending on the theme, and centre-cropping is what lops the top off a bottle or the bottom off a shoe. Square avoids the decision entirely.

Does Shopify require a particular background?

No. Unlike Amazon, Shopify has no background requirement — it is your store. What matters is that you pick one approach and apply it to your whole catalog, because your products appear side by side in collection pages.

How large can a Shopify image be?

Shopify accepts files well above what you need, with a 20 MB limit per image. But large files slow your store, and page speed affects both conversion and search ranking. Keeping product images a few hundred KB is a better target than maxing out the allowance.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The resize runs entirely inside your browser. Your product photos never leave your device.

Shopify revises its recommendations periodically — confirm current guidance in Shopify's documentation before a large upload. Sizes for other platforms are on the product image size guide.
